Happy Birthday Foundr! Reflections on 3 Years Building a Community of Entrepreneurs
When you’re in the midst of building a business from the ground up, it’s incredibly easy to lose perspective. After all, even working on your dream is still work, and it can be all-consuming.
But now and then, you look up from the work and the incremental steps, and you realize this project that started in the down time from your job has taken on a life of its own! I was chatting with the team the other day about Foundr’s third birthday, and it really hit me all at once just how far we’ve come.
Foundr’s first ever sale!
We launched Foundr as a monthly magazine on March 5, 2013, and I’ll never forget that first sale. It was $5. Just about one year later, I was able to quit my full-time job, and from there it’s been a total whirlwind:
- For starters, we’ve interviewed so many of my heroes! Richard Branson, Tim Ferriss, Seth Godin, Arianna Huffington, Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Tony Robbins, Gary Vee, and list goes on with new, incredible business role models filling the calendar ahead.
- Our mission to serve early stage entrepreneurs struck a chord early on, and it’s shown in the numbers. Our magazine is a top 5 ranked Business & Investing magazine in the app store, and the podcast is consistently in the top 50 in the Business section in every country. We were a runner up for publisher of the year in the Digital Magazine Awards in 2014 and 2015.
- Foundr has grown far beyond its original scope. We’re much more than a magazine these days, serving more than 1 million entrepreneurs through our blogging, podcast, social media channels, and now webinars and courses. We’ve grown to a team of 10, and will be moving into a brick and mortar space this year.
But the thing that’s blown me away in these three years, and that I’m most proud of, is you all. I always knew I could provide a reliable service to other people in my position, but I never expected such a tightly knit community of amazing people to come together as we’ve grown. Quite literally, everything we’ve been able to accomplish is because of this community, and we’re grateful every day for that. Through Foundr, I’ve made business partners, mentors, and close friends.
Just some of the great friends I’ve made over my journey as an entrepreneur
That community has also progressed a lot in three years, with the launch of Foundr Club and our entry into online courses. I’ve watched as our members have developed the tools and confidence to start pursuing their dreams and even gone on to build their own million-dollar startups. Nothing makes the team and me happier at the end of the day than interacting with other people who dream big, and then seeing them rise to success.
But don’t worry, we’re only getting started. In coming years, you can expect to see Foundr expand our product suite and go deeper into online education to more directly serve our community.
We also plan to create more opportunities to connect entrepreneurs, face-to-face, IRL. Last time I was in New York, I was able to sit down over coffee with Seth Godin, and he had some great insight (not surprising!) that the next level for Foundr could be convening the community in person. Running with that, in the next two years, we’ll be exploring opportunities to host centralized events, and Foundr meetups in your town.
But most of all, we’re just going to keep having fun and doing what’s clearly working. Foundr is here to serve entrepreneurs however we can, and be the best resource out there to show you what it takes to start and grow your business.
So now that we’ve blown out our birthday candles and tied a few on in celebration, we’re going right back at it, providing you with strategic, actionable guidance you’ve come to count on.
Nothing but smiles from the Melbourne-based members of Team Foundr
